If you’ve walked through the previous pages then you know that children swim for many different reasons, but the main reason children drop out of swimming is … pressure. The source of this pressure is usually from the parent, coach or both. There are 5 identified stages of training during a swimmer’s career. The physical age of maturity should define which stage the swimmer is in, not the chronological age. At the developmental age, focusing on the process (doing things right) far outweighs focusing on the outcome (winning). Growth and body changes at this age can set technique backwards. Keeping it positive, and having fun will help the swimmer overcome any temporary setbacks and provide them with a sport that will occupy them for life. The health benefits and social benefits from participating in swimming
are huge and will help insure the brightest possible future.
